R. Chetwynd-Hayes

Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes, best known for his brilliant ghost and supernatural stories, was born on the 30th May 1919, in Isleworth, Middlesex. His very first published work was the science fiction novel The Man From The Bomb in 1959. He went on to publish many collections of ghost and horror stories, in addition to ten other novels. He also edited over 20 anthologies.

Some of his short horror stories were adapted for anthology style movies in the United Kingdom, most notably From Beyond The Grave (one of my all-time favourite horror anthology movies!) and The Monster Club (which starred John Carradine as R. Chetwynd Hayes). His stories were often featured in The Pan Book of Horror Stories and The Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories, many of which I read in my teens back in the seventies.

Chetwynd Hayes won the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement for 1988, and the British Fantasy Society Special Award in 1989.

He tragically passed away from bronchial pneumonia on 20th March 2001, at the age of 81.
